TILES TILES TILES!!
Day one, Robbie does the run through of studio operations and assigns me my first task “wedge clay for tiles.” I start wedging this clay for a tile project she’s working on for an exposed chimney spanning two floors. Little did I know this was a project that would consume the majority of the summer AND take up all possible flat space in the studio and eventually in the kiln (another later obstacle). I make a few tiles, about 10 in one day and I’m pretty excited, these are looking great! And then they start piling up and piling up. But it was all worth it in the (not so near) end.
Robbie stacked the kiln TIGHT, an amazing feat only sheer talent and a little luck could make possible. Although the result was beautiful we still have a long way to go.

I’ve learned a lot from this project thus far. I think its safe to say I’m sufficiently good at wedging clay (which is more difficult to do right than you’d think) using a plaster tile mold (without getting plaster in/on the clay). I’ve even proven myself competent at mixing glazes (the whole batch of tiles came out great with no testing before!).
There are more tiles to come but with the success of this most recent firing I’m hopeful and excited to finish and see the finished product, I think Robbie would agree!
